  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, finely chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef
  • 1/2 pound (225g) ground pork
  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
  • 1 can (28 ounces/800g) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup beef or vegetable broth (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a colossal pot over medium power.
  2. Add the chopped onion, carrots, celery, and garlic. Cook until vegetables are softened.
  3. Add ground beef and pork, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.
  4. If using red wine, pour it into the pot and let it simmer for a few minutes until it reduces.
  5. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and milk. Season with salt, pepper, oregano, basil, and nutmeg.
  6. If desired, add broth for additional liquid.
  7. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for at least 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  8. Adjust seasoning to taste and serve over your favorite pasta.
