Covert Narcissists Manipulative

Covert narcissists, like their overt counterparts, can exhibit manipulative behaviors, but they often do so in a more subtle and less obvious manner. Manipulation is a common trait in narcissistic individuals, whether covert or overt, as it serves their underlying need for control, admiration, and validation.

Here are some ways in which covert narcissists may engage in manipulation:

Victim Mentality: Covert narcissists often portray themselves as victims to gain sympathy and support from others. They may use their apparent vulnerability to manipulate people into doing what they want.

Guilt-Tripping: They may employ guilt and emotional manipulation to make others feel responsible for their well-being or happiness. This can lead people to do things they wouldn't otherwise do out of a sense of obligation.

Passive-Aggressiveness: Covert narcissists may express their anger or frustration indirectly through passive-aggressive behaviors, such as giving the silent treatment, making sarcastic comments, or using backhanded compliments.

Gaslighting: Gaslighting is a manipulation tactic where the narcissist tries to make their victim doubt their own perceptions or reality. Covert narcissists may use gaslighting to control and manipulate others.

Triangulation: Covert narcissists may create triangles in relationships, pitting one person against another to maintain control and keep the focus on them. This can create conflict and confusion among those involved.

Martyrdom: They might take on a self-sacrificing role, often doing things for others but with the expectation of receiving excessive gratitude and praise in return. This is a form of manipulation to garner admiration.

Selective Vulnerability: Covert narcissists may strategically reveal vulnerability or disclose personal information to elicit a protective or caretaking response from others.

Silent Manipulation: Unlike overt narcissists who are more overt in their demands for attention and admiration, covert narcissists may manipulate behind the scenes, using passive tactics to control situations and people.

It's important to note that not all covert narcissists will engage in every form of manipulation, and the extent and nature of their manipulative behaviors can vary from person to person. Additionally, not all covert narcissists are necessarily aware of the harm they may cause through their manipulative actions, as their behaviors often stem from deep-seated insecurities and a fragile self-esteem.

Recognizing and dealing with covert narcissistic manipulation can be challenging, as it is often subtle and harder to detect than overt manipulation. If you suspect you are dealing with a covert narcissist in a relationship, seeking support from a therapist or counselor can be helpful in understanding and addressing the dynamics involved.
